The University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department issued a personal safety alert on January 24, 2008 announcing two separate assaults that occurred in commonly traversed areas on campus on January 19 and January 21. Both incidents involved students of the university, although they were not robbed and no weapons were used.
The first assault occurred on January 19 at approximately 8:45 p.m. A medical student was assaulted by an unidentified number of juveniles in the 600 block of West Lexington Street. One of the juveniles hit the student in the face, causing some minor bruising. The juveniles suspected to be involved in this assault were taken into custody.
In a second, unrelated assault, another medical student was assaulted by an unidentified number of black, male juveniles on January 21 in the 200 block of North Pine Street. The assault took place at 2:10 p.m. near the student center, and just steps away from the University Police Department. The student also sustained minor bruising from a blow to the face. No arrest has been made in the incident.
The assaults appear to simply be the latest in a string of juvenile-related assaults. On December 4, 2007 26-year-old Sarah Kreager was brutally beaten and dragged from an MTA bus by a group of juveniles from Robert Poole Middle School. Nine juveniles have been arrested in the matter and may face up to 15 years in prison if tried as adults.
In late November, six juveniles attacked an Edgewood man with a bat. He was beaten and kicked, leaving him paralyzed according to Harford County sheriff’s deputies.
The University Police is currently conducting an investigation into the assaults. Anyone having information regarding either incident should contact Detective Daniel Boone at 410-706-3573.
