On March 5, the School of Medicine Class of 2010 held the fifth annual Medical Student Auction was in Westminster Hall with the goal of raising money for charity and class events. Some of the money will be donated to Maryland for Mali while another portion will go to the Ronald McDonald House and the rest will fund class activities in 2008.

The event included a silent auction of 78 items followed by a live auction of seven items.  When asked about the source of the auction items, Panagis Galiasatos, who serves in the class counsel, said many of them came from medical faculty and students and others were donated from local businesses.

Auction items ranged from an opportunity to have lunch with SOM Dean E. Albert Reese to an opportunity to sample a variety of desserts of the month.  Dr. Jordan Warnick, Assistant Dean for Student Education & Research, offered dinners at his house. Warnick hoped that his offer helped to support a student cause while showing a different side of himself as a professor.

A student from the School of Pharmacy said this auction offered a “very unusual mix of things to purchase,” and was amazed that many international goods were up for sale.

Besides students, many faculty and parents came to support the auction. One student’s mother said, “[I was] impressed how well it was organized.”  She added that she enjoyed meeting her daughter’s friends and professors, and even bid on her daughter’s donated item—an evening of babysitting.

The auction ran smoothly with some items selling at a very high price. For instance, a holiday package for “One Week in Ocean City” was sold at $859.

The auction raised around $11,000 this year according to Nidhi Goel, vice president of the class of 2010.
