On March 1, the Office of Auxiliary Services began a contest to encourage use of the UMB One Card by automatically entering users into a raffle of several high-end items.  The contest, sponsored by Coca-Cola, hopes to promote the recognition and use of the One Card, which was designated as the official campus identification card for UMB in 2006 and has since gained functionality for many on and off-campus services.

According to Kathy Bordenski, Assistant Director for Auxiliary Services, the promotion was designed because the One Card is still a relatively new concept, so the contest provides an opportunity to create “a level of fun and excitement for people as they learn about the convenience of using the One Card for purchases.”  Student usage of the One Card had been increasing prior to the start of the promotion, and Bordenski expects utilization to continue to rise with this promotion.

UMB has never offered a contest similar to this before, which runs from March 1 through May 31.  Raffles will be held on April 11 for transactions made during the month of March; on May 9 for transactions during April; and June 9 for transactions occurring in May.  Prizes consist of two Apple iPhones, two Macbook Air laptop computers, two flat-panel plasma televisions, and two vacation packages for two-persons to be used in 2009.  A computer will randomly select both the winner and the prize, with winners notified by phone or email, according to their information on file with UMB.

The winners will be selected and announced on a monthly basis because Auxiliary Services “thought the campus would prefer the raffle to take place at the end of the month so they wouldn’t have to wait until the end of May” to win a prize, according to Bordenski.  There will be three winners from both the March and April pool of entrants, and two winners from the May pool.

One Card users are entered into the contest each time they use their card.  The One Card is accepted at certain on-campus vending machines and more than 30 vendors that can be found both on and around campus.  A list of locations of accepting vendors can be found at www.umb-one.umaryland.edu.  Funds may also be added to an account through the website or by visiting the “Value Add Stations” found in the Health Sciences and Human Services Library and the Student Center on Pine Street.

Bordenski’s hope is that “it only takes one time to use your One Card…[to] be hooked on the convenience of the card!”
