Despite the prominent display of a large black and yellow “For Sale” sign outside the Baltimore Chop, customers and Ridgely’s Delight residents need not be concerned that the local bookstore and music café will be moving anytime soon, according to owner Andy Rubin.

“The building is what’s for sale, not the bookstore,” said Rubin.  The building is being sold for about $1.6 million as part of the current developer’s effort to focus on expanding projects in nearby Pigtown.

Lately, Rubin has had to reassure many concerned customers that he has no plans to leave.  “People come in and ask,” said Rubin.  “People are worried and panicked, and I tell them that it’s okay.”

Rubin’s lease ends in December, but he intends to renew his lease for several more years.  “I have a lease, so I’m solid,” he said.  “It’s just a different landlord.”

“Hopefully it’ll sell soon so they can get the sign down,” said Rubin.

As the Baltimore Chop celebrated its one-year anniversary, Rubin described a recent expansion of his menu to include turkey, corn beef, pastrami, and chicken salad sandwiches.  “It’s the best deli on the planet,” said Rubin, “and I’m from New York City, so I can say that.”
