Introducing the Campus Connection!
A Welcome Message to First-Time Readers
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the Campus Connection, the independent student-run newspaper here at the University of Maryland-Baltimore! The Campus Connection was created to fill a glaring void on campus: the absence of a student-run publication to directly communicate with and inform the campus community of matters that affect the lives of students and to provide students an open forum for discussion and sharing of knowledge and perspectives. A review of the other eleven universities of the University System of Maryland revealed that UMB was essentially the only institution lacking a student-run publication. A university of our size, caliber, and diversity should have a student newspaper, and we hope with our work, it now will.
This effort to start a campus newspaper first began in February 2007 and has since garnered interested students representing every school at the University. We emphasize that we are independent: we are not funded by the University, and we do not receive funds from student government. We will always strive to maintain our independence, to provide unbiased coverage, and offer stories with UMB students' perspectives in mind.
Our primary form of publication will be here online via our website. To limit costs and expenses, print editions of the newspaper will be available and distributed in limited numbers periodically. However, in all other ways, we will function just like any student newspaper.
And similar to other student newspapers, we need your help. Our coverage aims to be broad and diverse so if you ever have any story ideas, please drop us a line to let us know (we will assure you anonymity if you so choose). We are a new newspaper, and we acknowledge that there will be room for us to improve; if you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to e-mail any of us on the staff. We also welcome contributions from anyone associated with UMB, whether they are current students, staff, faculty, administrators, or alumni. Please contact an editor if you are interested in serving as a contributing writer or photographer.
Finally, I would like to personally thank all of the editors and staff who have generously assisted with their time and effort over the last several months. The endeavor to initiate this publication was challenging and could not have been accomplished without their dedication and commitment to the vision of bettering the lives of everyone at UMB.
Sincerely,
Clarence Lam
